Apple Butter Festival - October 18, 2008
The Apple Butter Festival began several years ago as a way for
members and friends to share their bounty of food and fellowship.
. It has grown over the years and is now a festival that draws
crowds from near and far away.
PLEASE NOTE: Last year the ladies washed
over 3,500 jars in preparation for the year's apple butter
supply.
Preparations
Starting the week before the Festival, apples are picked up,
washed and readied for the daily activities of sorting, peeling
and slicing. Many long hours are spent by members who work in
the kitchen of the fellowship hall under a banner that proclaims
"Jesus is the Apple of our Eye." It is a week of hard work, fun,
fellowship and laughter for everyone who comes to help.
On Friday 150+ pies are made, baked and readied for sale on
Saturday. Some will be sold at the bake sale - others will be
sliced for eating when the food is served. The church makes approximately
500 gallons of apple butter which is sold by advance orders and
on the day of the Festival. Many hours of stirring (and many
volunteers to stir) are needed to complete the process. The first
kettle
on Saturday goes on at 5:00 A.M. and the apple butter is made
outside, hand-stirred the old fashioned way all day.. Visitors
are always welcome to try their hand at stirring.
Food is served beginning at 11:00 A.M. There
is a craft sale at 9:00 A.M. in the old church building and
a Bake Sale starts at the same time. We will have a flea market
under the tents, crafts in the old church.
Our beautiful
2007 quilt, Eden's North Woods, was a queen sized
bed quilt, pieced by Eden Church women and long arm quilted
by Patricia
Bird..
It was part
of
the
Silent Auction. The quilt is 100% cotton, mostly Thimbleberries
fabrics, with batik borders and backing and measures 108" x 90"
Along with all the festivities are many country gospel groups
performing throughout the day including the church's own Edenaires
. Families come to enjoy the music, watch the youth groups make
fresh apple
cider,
and
meet new and
old friends.
PRE- ORDERS WILL BE TAKEN FOR THE APPLE BUTTER MADE
FESTIVAL DAY. Orders may be picked up at McAllister's
Store in Hot Springs after October 18. (Pre-Orders will be
held until December 15 - then offered for sale)
